Malachi 4:2 does in fact compare the Messiah to the sun. Yet the Bible clearly describes the sun as part of the created world (Genesis 1:16), neither divine nor to be worshipped (Ezekiel 8:16-17). The illustration in Malachi is only an analogy. In fact, the early Jews and Christians would never have worshipped a celestial body. The Roman Sol Invictus (unconquered sun) was later equated with Christ at a time when paganism was leaking into the church, but this was long after the New Testament was written. Occasionally some aspects of the lives of pagan gods and goddesses parallel Jesus Christ, but that is exactly what we should expect: The counterfeit imitates the authentic.
